The first American Football games played in Ireland were during WW2, teams of American Soldiers returning from the War played exhibition games in Belfast in aid of the Irish Red Cross.

The Dublin Celts, formed in 1984, were the first Irish Club, and the first Shamrock Bowl was played in 1986. The 1987 season saw the first full Irish American Football League season, with each team playing a balanced schedule with the same number of fixtures.
